Turing Complete/Incomplete

Alan Turing

  1. Turing completeness is a term used in computer science to describe a system or programming language that is capable of performing any computation that can be done by a Turing machine.

  2. A Turing machine is a theoretical device that can perform any computation that can be expressed as a set of instructions or an algorithm.

  3. A system that is Turing complete is said to be capable of "universal computation," meaning it can simulate any other system or programming language. In practical terms, this means that a Turing-complete system can be used to create any kind of computer program or algorithm, given enough time and resources.

  4. Most modern programming languages, including Java, Python, and C++, are Turing complete, meaning they can be used to create any kind of software application or system.

  5. Blockchain technology, such as Ethereum, is also Turing complete, which means that developers can use it to create decentralized applications and smart contracts that can perform complex computations and transactions.

  6. Turing completeness is a powerful concept in computer science because it allows for the creation of highly flexible and adaptable systems that can perform a wide range of functions.

  7. However, it also means that a Turing-complete system can be vulnerable to bugs and other errors that can lead to unexpected behavior or security vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly test and validate any software or system that uses Turing-complete programming languages or systems.

Turing Completeness Conditions

There are several conditions that must be met for a system or programming language to be considered Turing complete:

  1. The system must have a set of instructions that can be executed by a computing device.

  2. The system must be able to read and write data to a memory storage device, such as a computer's hard drive or RAM.

  3. The system must be able to perform conditional branching, meaning it can execute different instructions based on the results of previous instructions.

  4. The system must be able to perform iterative looping, meaning it can execute a set of instructions repeatedly.

These conditions are based on the properties of a Turing machine, which is a theoretical device that can perform any computation that can be expressed as a set of instructions or an algorithm. If a system or programming language can meet these conditions, it is said to be Turing complete, meaning it can perform any computation that can be performed by a Turing machine.

In practical terms, most modern programming languages are Turing complete, including Java, Python, C++, and many others. Blockchain technology, such as Ethereum, is also Turing complete, which allows for the creation of decentralized applications and smart contracts that can perform complex computations and transactions.

Bitcoin Drawbacks

Bitcoin has several drawbacks that have been identified by its critics and users. Some of these drawbacks include:

  1. Scalability: Bitcoin's underlying technology, the blockchain, has scalability issues that limit its ability to process a high volume of transactions. This has resulted in long transaction confirmation times and high transaction fees during periods of high demand.

  2. Energy consumption: Bitcoin mining requires a significant amount of energy, which has raised concerns about its environmental impact. As the difficulty of mining Bitcoin increases, so does the energy consumption required to mine new blocks.

  3. Security concerns: While the Bitcoin network is secure, individual users can be vulnerable to hacks and scams, especially if they store their Bitcoin in unsecured wallets or exchanges.

  4. Volatility: Bitcoin's value is highly volatile, which makes it difficult to use as a stable store of value or medium of exchange. Its value can fluctuate significantly in a short period of time, which can make it difficult for users to plan and budget effectively.

  5. Lack of regulation: Bitcoin operates outside of traditional financial systems and is not regulated by any government or financial institution. This has raised concerns about its use for illicit activities and the potential for fraud and market manipulation.

  6. Irreversibility of transactions: Once a Bitcoin transaction has been confirmed on the blockchain, it cannot be reversed. This can be problematic if a user accidentally sends Bitcoin to the wrong address or falls victim to a scam.

  7. It can be only used for financial transactions

  8. It is Turing Incomplete.

These drawbacks are not unique to Bitcoin and are common issues faced by many cryptocurrencies. Despite these drawbacks, Bitcoin remains the most widely used and recognized cryptocurrency in the world.

Ethereum Intro

  1. Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform that was launched in 2015 by a developer named Vitalik Buterin.

  2. It is designed to support the development and execution of decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts, which are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement between buyer and seller being directly written into lines of code.

  3. One of the key features of Ethereum is its ability to create and execute smart contracts.

  4. These contracts allow developers to create complex applications that can automatically execute code when certain conditions are met. Smart contracts have the potential to revolutionize many industries, including finance, real estate, and supply chain management, by reducing the need for intermediaries and increasing transparency.

  5. Ethereum has its own native cryptocurrency, called Ether (ETH), which is used to pay transaction fees and computational services on the Ethereum network. Ethereum also allows developers to create their own tokens, which can be used to represent digital assets or as a means of payment within a dApp.

  6. Ethereum uses a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus algorithm to validate transactions and maintain the integrity of the network.

  7. However, it is in the process of transitioning to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithm, which is expected to increase network efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

Properties Of Ethereum

  1. It is Turing complete.

  2. It only decentralizes finance but also we can develop any platform

  3. Has a programming language called solidity that helps us to write code directly on the blockchain

  4. Goal of ethereum is to decentralize internet not just finance
